Basilica of Saint Peter is the greatest papal basilica
of Rome, often described as the greatest church
in the world. The construction of the actual Basilica
of Saint Peter began in 1506 under Pope Giulio II and
was finished in 1626 with Pope Urbano VIII. It is a
reconstruction, because before there was another basilica
of the IV century, built by the emperor Costantino where
there was circus of Nerone and where the tradition wants
that saint Peter, first Pope of the Christianity, had
been buried after its crucifixion. Today we can only
imagine the importance of this building, in some artistic
pictures: the system, enriched during the centuries
with precious works of art.
